Why It Is a Good Idea to Ask Some Questions about Upbringing
Do we know how to become good parents?
Regardless of whether we have children or this is the important event that we expect, we all aim at becoming good parents. We do so – even when the meaning of “good parenting” seems too evasive to us. We read, listen to the stories of others, observe, and remember our own parents` upbringing methods. At the same time, we are hardly prepared for this huge responsibility – to create and raise a human being.
What have we learnt throughout our entire life?
It happens that during our life, we have educated ourselves, acquiring various skills: communication and mastery of various techniques and skills. We have completed our education, prepared for our job, took part in numerous courses and trainings, raised our qualifications, and attended various conferences and seminars… However, like our parents, we didn`t acquire knowledge of how to become parents.
When do we learn how to become parents?
Child psychologists go through a long process of learning in order to acquire a proper understanding of child development and upbringing. As it happens with most people, they educate themselves after becoming parents. Most of the time, this happens in the worst possible scenario – they test various approaches on their children. Some work well, others are better if left untried.
What happens during the early stage of the child`s life?
Right after the child is born, the little one begins to intensively absorb everything for (and from) the surrounding environment. The parents have considerable responsibility for this process because they model the young and help the formation of their views to the largest extent. The first couple of years leave a lasting mark on the psyche of the child. In this manner, the behavior of parents is decisive for the future of youngsters. The most mechanical and involuntary gestures, your accidental slips of the tongues, as well as various actions and events come to form the character and perceptions of the next generation.
When do young persons reach their average intelligence?
Many of us may guess that people reach 50% of their intelligence at 18, 20, 30, or even later in life. As of recently, many scholars have undertaken research on the issue and claim that the answer is “between 3 and 4 years of age”. The first five year period of the child`s life is the most important and decisive. The key structures are already formed at the age of five and the personality of this period will be a lasting trait which defines the line between success and failure in the future. When parents are aware of these facts, they know that during the initial years, the child is actively processing and putting into use the acquired knowledge and skills. The intelligence of the grown-up person is, to a large degree, determined by the type of intellectual stimulation which was received during childhood. Is this a reason to rethink the statement: “we are capable of doing as much as we know”? We are the people who determine the skills and knowledge of our children – their ticket for a life of success!
